The diagram illustrates how rainwater is collected, stored and used in a house.
Overall, there are seven main stages in the process, beginning with rain falling on the roof and ending with the water being used for household purposes. The system also includes an overflow pipe for excess water.
First, rain falls onto the roof of the house and is collected in gutters that run along its edges. From the gutters, the water flows down a downpipe and then passes through a filter, where leaves and other debris are removed so that the water is clean enough to store.
After this, the filtered water is stored in a large tank under the ground. If the tank becomes full, any extra water is channelled through an overflow pipe into the street drain. When the water is needed, it is pumped up from the tank into the house. Finally, it is used for purposes that do not require drinking water, such as flushing toilets, running the washing machine and watering the garden.
