The maps compare the present layout of Riverside town centre with a proposed plan for its redevelopment.

Overall, the plan would make the town centre greener and more suitable for pedestrians and cyclists, with cars and buses largely removed from Main Street. The shops and the houses, however, would remain unchanged.

To the north of Main Street, the large car park in the north-west is to be replaced by a park with a play area, and a small café will be built next to it. The row of shops to the east will stay where it is.

The most significant change concerns Main Street itself, which will be closed to cars and buses and turned into a pedestrian area with a cycle lane. South of the street, the bus station will be relocated outside the town centre, and its site will be used for a multi-storey car park. Finally, a new walk is to be constructed along the bank of the river, behind the houses.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to give my views on the proposal to close Main Street to cars and buses. As a resident who has lived in the town centre for over ten years, I am very interested in this plan.

I strongly support the idea of making the street safer for pedestrians. At present, the pavements are narrow and the traffic is heavy, so it is quite dangerous for children and elderly people. I also welcome the new cycle lane and the riverside walk, which would encourage people to exercise.

However, I have serious concerns about moving the bus station out of the town centre. Many older residents and people with disabilities rely on buses to reach the shops and the health centre, and they would find it very difficult to walk from the edge of town.

I would therefore like to suggest that a small electric shuttle bus should run along Main Street at regular intervals, connecting the new bus station with the town centre. This would keep the street quiet while ensuring that everyone can still get around.

I hope the council will take residents' views into account.

I support the new bus lane, as buses on this street are often stuck in traffic for 20 minutes or more. However, I'm worried about the loss of parking for the small shops. Could the plan include some short-stay parking spaces on the side streets? Thank you for asking for residents' views.
