The bar chart compares the proportions of three age groups in the population of Country Q in 2000 and 2025, and shows projections for 2050.
Overall, the population has been ageing and is expected to continue to do so, with the share of people aged 65 and over rising and the share of children falling. Although people of working age made up the largest group throughout, their proportion is projected to decline after 2025.
In 2000, children aged 0–14 accounted for 30% of the population, while only 7% of people were aged 65 or over. By 2025, the share of children had fallen to 22%, and the proportion of older people had almost doubled to 12%. These trends are predicted to continue, with children making up only 17% of the population in 2050 and the over-65s almost a quarter (23%).
The working-age group, aged 15–64, rose slightly from 63% to 66% between 2000 and 2025. However, it is expected to shrink to 60% by 2050.
