Q: Were there many rules in your school? Far too many, if you ask me. We had rules about everything – the length of our hair, the colour of our socks, even where we could sit at lunch. Looking back, some of them made sense, like not using phones in class, but others seemed to exist just for the sake of it.
Q: Are you usually on time? I’d say I’m fairly punctual for work – I hate walking into a meeting late. That said, with the traffic in my city, it’s almost impossible to arrive on the dot, so I always allow an extra twenty minutes. With friends, I’m a bit more relaxed – nobody expects you to be exactly on time for coffee.

Bài mẫu do khóa học viết; tình huống giả định.
I’d like to talk about a rule at my company which says that no meetings can be scheduled on Wednesday afternoons. It was introduced about two years ago, and it applies to everyone, including senior managers.
The idea came from our HR department after a staff survey showed that many people felt they had no time to do their actual work because their days were full of meetings. So now, from one o’clock on Wednesdays, the calendar is blocked for “focus time”.
To be honest, people’s reactions at first were mixed. Some managers complained that it was too rigid, and a few teams tried to bend the rules by calling them “quick chats” instead of meetings. But the company enforced it quite strictly, and after a couple of months most people came round to the idea.
I think it’s useful for two reasons. Firstly, it gives everyone a guaranteed block of uninterrupted time, which is when I tend to do my most important tasks, like writing reports. Secondly, it has made people think more carefully about whether a meeting is really necessary at all. It’s generally accepted now that our meetings are shorter and better prepared than before. It’s a simple rule, but it’s made a real difference to how we work.
