Q: How was your school different from schools today? Quite different, I’d say. When I was at school, there was a lot of rote learning – we memorised whole pages for exams. From what I’ve seen of my nephew’s school, there’s far more emphasis on group projects and hands-on activities, which I think is a big improvement.
Q: Do you like studying online? It depends on the subject. For something like grammar or software skills, I find self-paced online courses really convenient, because I can fit them around work. But for anything that involves discussion, I learn far better face to face – online, it’s too easy to get distracted by emails.

I’d like to talk about a course in public speaking that I’m hoping to take next year.
There’s a well-known training centre near my office that runs an eight-week evening course, with one three-hour session a week. What I like about it is that it’s very practical – each week, participants give a short speech, which is recorded and then analysed by the trainer and the rest of the group.
The main reason I want to take it is that public speaking has always been my weak point. In my job, I’m increasingly expected to present reports to managers and occasionally to clients, and even though I usually know the content well, I get nervous and tend to rush. A colleague of mine took the course last year, and I noticed a real difference in the way she handled meetings afterwards.
I’m planning to start as soon as my current project finishes, probably in March. If I can persuade my company to cover part of the fee, that would be ideal, but I’d be willing to pay for it myself if necessary.
I think it would help me in two ways. In the short term, I’d feel more confident in meetings and presentations. In the longer term, being able to communicate clearly is essential if I want to move into a management role, so I see it as an investment in my career.
