Farming upwards

(Bài đọc tự viết; công ty, nhân vật và số liệu là giả định.)

A In a converted warehouse on the edge of a large city, rows of lettuce and herbs grow on shelves stacked ten levels high. There is no soil and no sunlight; instead, the plants receive nutrients through water and light from LED lamps. This is vertical farming, a method that its supporters believe could transform the way cities are fed.

B The company behind the farm, GreenStack, claims that its system uses far less water than conventional agriculture, because water is recycled within a closed system. It also says that its crops require no pesticides, since insects cannot easily enter the sealed growing rooms. Because the farm is located close to supermarkets, produce can be delivered within hours of being harvested, reducing food miles and extending its shelf life.

C Independent experts accept some of these advantages but are more cautious about others. Dr Yusuf Adeyemi, an agricultural scientist who has visited several vertical farms, agrees that controlled environments can reduce water use and protect crops from pests. However, he points out that the systems are highly energy-intensive. LED lighting and climate control run day and night, and unless the electricity comes from renewable sources, the environmental benefits may be smaller than they first appear.

D Cost is another obstacle. Building a vertical farm requires a large initial investment, and running costs remain high. As a result, most vertical farms currently grow only fast-growing, high-value crops such as salad leaves, herbs and strawberries. Staple crops like rice, wheat and potatoes, which provide most of the world’s calories, need far more space and light and are not considered economically viable in vertical systems at present.

E Supporters argue that the technology is still young and that costs are falling as lighting becomes more efficient. Some also see vertical farms as a way to secure fresh food supplies in places with poor soil or extreme weather. Adeyemi believes they will play a useful but limited role. “They won’t replace traditional farms,” he says, “but they could become one part of a more resilient food system, particularly for cities.”
