Presenter
Welcome to 'Check Before You Share'. This week, I'm joined by Nadia Kowalski, who runs a small fact-checking team at a regional newspaper.
Nadia
Thanks for having me. People often imagine that misinformation is mostly invented stories. In fact, a lot of what we check is real information used in a misleading way – a genuine photo, for example, shared with the wrong date or place.
Presenter
So it's taken out of context.
Nadia
Exactly. Last month, a photo of a flooded street went viral with the claim that it showed our town that morning. It was a real photo, but it had been taken in another country several years earlier.
Presenter
How did you find that out?
Nadia
We did a reverse image search, which shows where else a picture has appeared online. That's the first step I'd recommend to listeners. The second is to look for the original source – not the person who shared it, but who actually produced the information. And the third is simply to wait. Many false stories are corrected within a few hours.
Presenter
Some people dismiss fact-checking as a waste of time. How do you respond?
Nadia
I'd point out that it often takes only a couple of minutes. I acknowledge that we can't check everything – there's far too much – so we focus on claims that could cause real harm, such as false health advice or rumours about emergencies.
Presenter
Finally, what about our listeners' own role?
Nadia
I'd insist that everyone has a role. If you realise you've shared something false, say so publicly. It feels embarrassing, but it actually makes people trust you more, not less.
Presenter
Next week on the programme, we'll be looking at how to spot fake online reviews.
