Why false stories travel fast
(Bài đọc tự viết; không dựa trên nghiên cứu cụ thể.)
A It is often said that a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes. Whatever the origin of the saying, it seems to describe the online world well. False or misleading stories frequently spread further and faster than accurate ones. Understanding why requires looking not only at technology but also at human psychology.
B The first factor is emotion. Stories that provoke surprise, fear or outrage are more likely to be shared than calm, balanced reports. A shocking headline gives readers an immediate reason to pass it on – to warn friends or to express their anger. Accurate information, by contrast, is often more complicated and less dramatic, and therefore less likely to go viral.
C Technology then amplifies this tendency. Many platforms use algorithms that promote content which receives a lot of attention, regardless of whether it is true. Some commentators dismiss concerns about algorithms as exaggerated, arguing that people would share sensational stories anyway. This argument, in my view, misses the point: algorithms do not create our weaknesses, but they reward them on an enormous scale.
D A further problem is that corrections rarely travel as far as the original story. A false claim may be shared thousands of times before it is checked, and the correction, when it appears, tends to reach only a fraction of the same audience. Even those who see it may continue to remember the original claim, particularly if it fitted what they already believed.
E What, then, can be done? Media literacy education – teaching people to question sources and recognise manipulation – is frequently proposed, and I believe it is essential, especially for young people. However, it would be unrealistic to expect individuals alone to solve a problem that is built into the design of online platforms. Responsibility must be shared between users, platforms and, where necessary, regulators.
