It is sometimes argued that money spent on exploring space would be better used to tackle problems on Earth, such as poverty and climate change. While I agree that spending on space should be limited and carefully justified, I disagree that it should be stopped altogether, because space research often helps to solve the very problems it is accused of ignoring.
There is certainly some logic to the view that space programmes are a luxury. Many countries face pressing needs, from inadequate healthcare to the effects of extreme weather, and sending missions to distant planets can seem difficult to justify when people lack basic services. Moreover, the benefits of exploring other planets are often uncertain and may take decades to appear, whereas the needs of poor communities are immediate.
However, this argument presents a false choice. Much of what is described as space exploration is in fact focused on Earth itself. Satellites, for example, allow scientists to monitor rising sea levels, melting ice and deforestation, and they help forecasters warn communities about approaching storms. Without this technology, it would be far harder to understand climate change, let alone respond to it. In addition, space programmes can inspire young people to study science and engineering, and these skilled graduates are likely to be needed to develop solutions to environmental problems in the future.
That said, governments should be selective. Projects that offer clear practical benefits, such as Earth observation, deserve stronger support than prestige missions whose main purpose is national pride.
In conclusion, although spending on space should not be unlimited, abandoning it completely would be a mistake, since well-chosen space research can make a real contribution to solving problems on Earth.

Subject: Warehouse system – project update
The new stock system is now running in two of our three warehouses. The main issue is that barcode scanners at the third site are older and not fully compatible. We have ordered replacements, which are due to arrive next week. If installation goes to plan, all three sites are likely to be using the system by mid-January.
