Two education students, Duc and Sarah, discuss a presentation on adult language learning (giả định)

- Sarah
- So, for our presentation on adult language learning, I thought we could start with the idea that children pick up languages more easily.
- Duc
- Up to a point. Children often end up with a better accent, but adults can actually make faster progress at the beginning, because they can understand grammar explanations.
- Sarah
- That's true. I'd forgotten about that. So we shouldn't say adults are at a disadvantage overall.
- Duc
- Exactly. Then there's motivation. In my interviews, the adults who did best all had a clear reason to learn – a job, a move abroad, a partner's family.
- Sarah
- I found the same thing. But I'd add that the reason has to be personal. People who were learning only because their company required it often gave up.
- Duc
- I'm not sure about that. Two of my interviewees started because of work and ended up loving it.
- Sarah
- Fair enough – maybe we should say it can go either way. What about methods? Several of my interviewees criticised rote learning – memorising lists of words.
- Duc
- I see what you mean, but some vocabulary memorisation is useful, as long as it's combined with real use. What almost everyone agreed on was the value of exposure – listening to and reading lots of real language.
- Sarah
- Absolutely. And language exchanges came up a lot – meeting a native speaker who wants to learn your language.
- Duc
- Right. One woman said that was what finally made her fluent in Spanish, after years of classes.
- Sarah
- OK, so shall I do the section on age and motivation, and you take methods?
- Duc
- Sounds good. Let's meet on Thursday to put the slides together.
