In defence of the quiet colleague
(Bài đọc tự viết; quan điểm là của tác giả bài viết, công ty và nhân vật là giả định.)
A Walk into almost any modern office and you will find an architecture of extroversion: open-plan floors, glass meeting rooms, sofas designed for spontaneous collaboration. The message is clear. Good ideas, we are told, emerge from noise and interaction, and the best employees are those who speak up first and loudest. It is a message I have come to doubt.
B Let me begin with a concession. Collaboration matters, and there are jobs – sales, teaching, many kinds of management – in which comfort with constant interaction is a genuine advantage. Nor do I want to romanticise introversion. Quietness is not automatically a sign of depth, and some reserved colleagues are simply disengaged. My argument is narrower: that workplaces routinely conflate confidence with competence, and that this mistake has costs.
C Consider the typical meeting. The person who speaks first frames the discussion, and the ideas raised early tend to receive the most attention, regardless of their quality. Colleagues who prefer to think before speaking often arrive at a better proposal ten minutes later, by which time the group has already settled on something else. Over months and years, such patterns shape who is promoted. Those who are assertive are seen as natural leaders; those who are reflective are seen, at best, as reliable specialists.
D Defenders of the current approach argue that this is simply how organisations work, and that quieter staff should learn to adapt. There is some truth in this. Everyone benefits from being able to present an argument clearly under pressure, and I would not advise any young professional to rely on written reports alone. But adaptation should not run in one direction only. If an organisation values a particular temperament so highly that it ignores good ideas expressed in a different way, the problem lies at least in part with the organisation.
E What would a fairer workplace look like? It would not require the abolition of meetings or the construction of private offices for all. Small changes can go a long way. Circulating an agenda in advance allows people to prepare. Asking for written input before a discussion ensures that ideas are judged on their content rather than the volume at which they are delivered. One technology firm I spoke to began asking each participant to note down a proposal silently before anyone spoke; its managers reported that meetings became shorter and the range of suggestions noticeably wider, although they had not measured this formally.
F The underlying point is not really about personality types at all. It is about the difference between how people communicate and what they contribute. An organisation that cannot tell these apart will consistently undervalue some of its most thoughtful members – and, in an economy that increasingly depends on careful judgement rather than quick reactions, that is a luxury few can afford.

| Thì khi nói về xu hướng đến hiện tại | Offices have become more open in recent years. | |
| Hòa hợp chủ – vị với cụm dài | The range of suggestions was wider. |
Sửa lỗi chính xác
- is not the same as competence. (Confidence / The confidence?)
- A quiet colleague is not disengaged.
- Over the past decade, many firms adopted open-plan layouts.
- The quality of the ideas more than the volume at which they are delivered.
- Sổ cụm từ band 7: chép 3 cụm, ví dụ conflate X with Y, go a long way, a luxury few can afford (5 phút).
