It is often assumed that the kind of person we become is settled by the end of childhood. While I accept that early experiences and inborn temperament lay important foundations, I agree with this view only partly, since there is considerable evidence from everyday life that character continues to develop well into adulthood.

There are good reasons to believe that childhood matters greatly. Temperament – whether a child is cautious or adventurous, calm or easily upset – appears early and tends to remain recognisable over time. Moreover, the habits and values children absorb from their families are often deeply ingrained, because they are learnt before a person is able to question them. Someone raised in a household where disagreements were never discussed, for instance, may find open conflict uncomfortable for the rest of their life. This is not to say that such patterns are unchangeable, but it does explain why many adults recognise their younger selves in their present behaviour.

However, the claim that character changes very little after childhood underestimates the influence of adult experience. Major responsibilities such as a demanding job or becoming a parent require new behaviours, and what initially demands deliberate effort can become second nature over time. A shy graduate who starts teaching may, after several years of standing in front of a class, become genuinely confident, not merely better at pretending. Life events can also reshape priorities: people who survive a serious illness, for example, often describe becoming more patient or less concerned with status. It follows that character is better understood as a starting point than as a fixed outcome.

In conclusion, although childhood provides the raw material of personality, I believe that adulthood offers far more scope for change than the statement allows. Recognising this is important, because it encourages people to see their weaknesses not as permanent features but as areas in which growth is possible.

🔬 Phân tích bài mẫu – lập luận nhiều tầng hoạt động thế nào

Thân bài 2 (phía tác giả đồng ý một phần – nhượng bộ):

  • Claim: There are good reasons to believe that childhood matters greatly.
  • Mechanism: …because they are learnt before a person is able to question them.
  • Example: Someone raised in a household where disagreements were never discussed…
  • Limit: This is not to say that such patterns are unchangeable…
  • Implication: …it does explain why many adults recognise their younger selves…

Thân bài 3 (lập trường chính):

  • Claim → Mechanism (what initially demands deliberate effort can become second nature) → Example (shy graduate who starts teaching) → second example (life events) → Implication (It follows that…).

Vì sao vượt mức 6.5:

  1. Lập trường có sắc thái và nhất quán: agree only partly ở mở bài → far more scope for change than the statement allows ở kết bài.
  2. Hedge chính xác: appears early and tends to remain recognisable, may find, often describe – không tuyên bố như sự thật khoa học tuyệt đối.
  3. Ví dụ “có cơ chế”: không chỉ nói a shy person became confident, mà after several years of standing in front of a class… và phân biệt genuinely confident, not merely better at pretending.
  4. Từ vựng chủ đề tự nhiên: inborn temperament, lay foundations, deeply ingrained, second nature, raw material of personality.
  5. Kết bài thêm một tầng ý nghĩa (vì sao điều này quan trọng) nhưng không đưa luận điểm mới.

⚠️ Lỗi hay gặp ở band 6.5: mở bài “I completely agree” rồi thân bài lại nói ngược; thân bài chỉ có claim + ví dụ, thiếu cơ chế; viết Scientists have proved that personality never changes (khẳng định không có căn cứ).

🧩 3. Ngôn ngữ trọng tâm – 10 phút: hedge cho các nhận định tâm lý – xã hội

Quá tuyệt đối Chính xác
Childhood decides who we are. Childhood lays important foundations for who we become.
People never change. Core traits tend to remain recognisable over time.
Jobs change your personality. Demanding roles can gradually reshape behaviour.
Scientists have proved… There is considerable evidence from everyday life that… (hoặc tránh hẳn nếu không chắc)
