Q: Did you collect anything when you were a child? Stamps, briefly – mainly because my uncle worked at the post office and kept bringing me foreign ones. I wouldn’t say I was a serious collector, though. What I really enjoyed was the stories behind them – trying to find the countries on a map. Most of them are still in a box at my parents’ house, and they’ve got more sentimental value than anything else.
Q: Do you usually plan things in advance, or are you more spontaneous? It depends on what’s at stake. For work, I plan almost obsessively – I like to know what’s happening each week. But for weekends I’m much more spur-of-the-moment; if I plan my free time too carefully, it starts to feel like another job.

I’d like to talk about a decision I had to make about four years ago, when I was offered a job in another city.
At the time I’d been working for a medium-sized company for about five years. I was comfortable there – I knew everyone, I was good at my job and I’d just been given a small team to manage. Then a former colleague got in touch and asked if I’d be interested in a role at a much larger firm. It was a real step up in terms of responsibility and salary, but it meant moving to a city where I didn’t know anyone, about seven hundred kilometres from my family.
I agonised over it for nearly a month. I did the sensible thing and wrote down the pros and cons, but the list didn’t really help, because the two sides were so different – money and career on one side, relationships and security on the other. What finally tipped the balance was a conversation with my old manager. She asked me whether, in five years’ time, I’d be more likely to regret going or regret staying. I realised immediately that it was staying.
So I took the job. The first six months were honestly quite lonely, and there were moments when I second-guessed myself. But in hindsight it was the right call. If I hadn’t taken that leap of faith, I don’t think I’d have the confidence I have now, and I certainly wouldn’t have learnt as much. That said, I’m not sure I’d make the same choice if I had young children – so I’d say it was right for me at that particular moment, rather than right in general.

⚠️ Lỗi hay gặp ở band 6.5: kể quyết định mà không có lựa chọn thay thế; kết bằng “It was a good decision” (không có phân tích); dùng sai make a decision → do a decision.
Part 3 – ra quyết định

Nghe câu hỏi → nghĩ 10–15 giây → ghi âm câu trả lời 2–3 câu (khoảng 20–30 giây) → nghe lại và tự chấm bằng ô kiểm tra bên dưới.
- Stance rõ nhưng có sắc thái: On balance, I'd say… / I'm inclined to think… although…
- Phân biệt loại quyết định: everyday choices vs life-changing decisions.

To what extent should young people follow their parents' advice about careers?
