Gardens that drink the rain
(Bài đọc tự viết; dự án, nhân vật và số liệu là giả định. Không phải hướng dẫn thi công.)
A On a quiet residential street in the hypothetical town of Ashworth, a row of shallow, planted hollows now sits between the pavement and the road. To passers-by they look like ordinary flower beds. In fact, they are rain gardens: small landscaped areas designed to collect rainwater from roofs and paved surfaces and allow it to soak slowly into the ground, instead of rushing into the drains.
B The principle is simple, but the construction is more carefully engineered than it appears. A rain garden is built as a slight depression, usually no more than about twenty centimetres deep, so that water collects in it during a storm. The surface is covered with a layer of mulch – shredded bark or similar material – which protects the soil from drying out and from being washed away. Beneath the mulch lies a specially prepared soil mix, usually a blend of sand, topsoil and compost, which allows water to pass through quickly while still supporting plant growth. Below this is a gravel layer that stores water temporarily before it infiltrates into the natural ground. At one end, an overflow pipe carries away any water that the garden cannot hold during exceptionally heavy rain.
C The choice of plants matters as much as the structure. Designers generally favour native plants that can tolerate both waterlogged conditions after storms and dry spells in summer. Deep-rooted species are particularly valuable, since their roots create channels in the soil that help water to drain downwards.
D Installing a rain garden follows a clear sequence. First, the site is tested to check how quickly water drains from the existing ground; if drainage is extremely slow, a rain garden may not be suitable. Once a site has been approved, the area is excavated to the required depth and the gravel layer is laid. Next, the soil mix is added and shaped to form the depression. After planting, the surface is covered with mulch. Finally, the downpipe from the nearest roof, or a channel from the road, is redirected so that rainwater flows into the garden.
E Ashworth’s project manager, Carla Brennan, admits that the gardens are not maintenance-free. “Leaves and litter can block the overflow, and plants need watering in their first summer,” she says. Residents on each street have volunteered to check the gardens after storms. So far, the town reports that streets with rain gardens have experienced fewer complaints about standing water, although it has not yet measured the effect on the drainage system as a whole.

Checking drains before forecast heavy rain
1. First, check the weather forecast every Monday morning. 2. If heavy rain is expected, inspect the three drains in the loading bay. 3. Remove any leaves or litter by hand, wearing gloves. 4. Next, pour a bucket of water into each drain to check that it flows freely. 5. If water does not drain within one minute, report it to Facilities. 6. Finally, record the check on the maintenance sheet.
