The line graph illustrates how many cases of four types of offence were reported in Town K over a ten-year period from 2016 to 2026.

Overall, the most striking change was the dramatic rise in online fraud, which went from being the least common of the four offences to the most common. Reports of burglary and, after an initial increase, bicycle theft both declined, while vandalism remained broadly stable.

In 2016, bicycle theft was the most frequently reported offence, with 420 cases, followed closely by burglary at 380. Bicycle theft continued to rise, peaking at 500 cases in 2020, before falling steadily to 350 by the end of the period. Burglary, by contrast, declined throughout, with the number of reported cases falling by more than 40% to 220.

Online fraud, meanwhile, increased every year shown. Only 60 cases were recorded in 2016, but this figure had risen to 280 by 2022, when fraud overtook burglary, and it reached 450 in 2026, a seven-and-a-half-fold increase that made it the most common offence. Vandalism fluctuated only slightly, staying at around 200 cases per year.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing on behalf of the residents of Hoa Binh Street to draw your attention to a number of safety problems that have developed in our area over the past three months.

The main issue is street lighting. Four of the lamps along the footpath between the bus stop and our building have not been working since August, despite being reported twice. During the same period, at least six bicycles have been stolen from the stands near the footpath, and several residents have reported feeling followed on their way home after dark.

As a result, many people, particularly older residents and those who work late shifts, no longer feel comfortable walking home in the evening. Some parents have also stopped allowing their teenage children to use the bus after dark.

We would like to request that the broken lamps be repaired as a matter of priority. It would also be very helpful if the council could consider installing more secure bicycle stands, which might act as a deterrent. For our part, residents would be willing to set up a rota to report any further faults promptly.
