Homes for every age
(Bài đọc tự viết; chương trình, thành phố và nhân vật là giả định.)
A In many cities, two housing problems exist side by side. Older people living alone in houses that have become too large for them may go days without a meaningful conversation, whereas students and young workers struggle to find rooms they can afford. Intergenerational housing schemes attempt to solve both problems at once by bringing these groups together under one roof.
B The simplest model is the “homeshare”. An older householder offers a spare room to a younger person at a reduced rent, or sometimes none at all, in return for an agreed amount of help and company each week – cooking a shared meal, for example, or helping with shopping. The arrangement is not a substitute for professional care; younger residents are not expected to provide personal or medical support. Its purpose is companionship and practical help, albeit on a modest scale.
C Larger schemes take the form of co-housing developments, in which residents of different ages have their own private flats but share a garden, a kitchen and a common room. In the hypothetical city of Larsfeld, one such development houses retired residents alongside young families and students. Residents decide together how shared spaces are used and organise regular activities, from communal dinners to homework clubs run by retired teachers.
D Supporters point to benefits on both sides. For older residents, regular contact can reduce loneliness, which is increasingly recognised as a risk to health in its own right. For younger residents, the reduced cost of housing is often the initial attraction, but many report that the relationships turn out to matter more than the savings. There is also a wider benefit: groups that rarely meet in daily life come to understand each other better, challenging stereotypes on both sides.
E Notwithstanding these advantages, the schemes are not without difficulties. The most important is matching. A homeshare depends on two strangers living together successfully, and differences in habits – noise, cleanliness, routines – can quickly cause tension. Successful schemes therefore invest heavily in the matching process, interviewing both parties and arranging trial periods before any agreement is signed. Safeguards are equally essential: background checks, written agreements and a named coordinator whom either party can contact if problems arise.
F A second difficulty is scale. Homeshares depend on a supply of older householders with spare rooms who are willing to share them, and many are understandably cautious about inviting a stranger into their home. Co-housing developments, meanwhile, require land, planning permission and considerable organisation, so they remain relatively rare. For these reasons, it would be unrealistic to see intergenerational housing as a solution to either loneliness or housing shortages on its own.
G What such schemes do offer is a model of how housing can be designed around relationships rather than around separate groups. Whereas conventional developments often place retirement flats, student accommodation and family homes in different parts of a city, intergenerational schemes start from the assumption that people of different ages have something to offer one another. Even where full schemes are impractical, that assumption can inform smaller changes – shared gardens in new developments, or community rooms that host activities for all ages.
Câu 1–8: Complete the summary. Choose ONE WORD ONLY from the passage.
- In a homeshare, an older person offers a spare room at a reduced .
- In return, the younger person provides help and each week,
- although they are not expected to replace professional .
- For older residents, regular contact may reduce , which is now seen as a health risk.
- For younger people, lower housing costs are often the first , but relationships often matter more.
- Schemes may also challenge that different age groups hold about each other.
- The biggest difficulty is two strangers who can live together successfully,
- so good schemes interview both sides and arrange periods before any agreement is signed.
