The bar chart compares the share of Country V's population made up by children, working-age adults and people aged 65 and over in 1996 and 2026, together with projections for 2056.

Overall, the population has been ageing and is expected to continue doing so. The proportion of children has fallen steadily, whereas that of older people has risen and is forecast to exceed the share of children by 2056. Throughout the period, however, the 15–64 age group accounts for the majority of the population.

In 1996, people aged 15 to 64 made up 60% of the population, while children accounted for 35% and those aged 65 and over for just 5%. Thirty years later, the working-age share had grown to 68%, but the proportion of children had dropped to 22%.

By 2056, the share of children is projected to fall further, to 15%, and the working-age group is expected to return to 60%. The most dramatic change, however, concerns older people, whose share is forecast to rise to 25% – five times its 1996 level – meaning that they will outnumber children for the first time.

Dear Ms Nguyen,

I am writing to enquire about day care places at Sunrise Centre for my father, who lives about ten minutes away in Ward 5.

My father is 79 and, although he is still quite independent and enjoys company, his mobility has become limited since a fall earlier this year. He lives with my mother, who is finding it increasingly difficult to look after him on her own during the day, particularly as she has her own health appointments to attend.

In particular, I would like to know what activities you offer, and whether staff are able to help with medication and with moving around safely. As my father is a keen chess player, I would also be interested to hear whether there are opportunities for games or social activities in small groups.

Could you also tell me how many days a week a place would be available, what the fees are, and whether you provide transport to and from the centre?
