Director
Thank you all for coming. In just over a week, the Harbour Museum opens its doors, and you'll be the first people many visitors meet, so I'd like to give you an overview.
Director
As you know, the museum is housed in the old customs building by the harbour, which stood empty for nearly twenty years. It wasn't the city council that saved it, as people often assume – it was a group of local residents who campaigned for years and raised the first funds. The council became involved much later.
Director
What makes this museum different from most is that around a third of the objects on display were donated by local families rather than bought from dealers. Each one comes with a recorded story from the person who donated it, which visitors can listen to on the audio guide.
Director
Let me take you through the floors. The basement, which used to be the customs warehouse, now holds the Maritime Gallery, with boats, maps and navigation instruments. On the ground floor, there's the reception, the shop and the café. The Family Gallery was originally planned for the second floor, but we've moved it to the ground floor so that it's easier to reach with pushchairs.
Director
On the first floor, you'll find the Trade Gallery, which tells the story of the goods that passed through the port, and next to it the Conservation Studio. That's a working studio where our team restores damaged objects, and visitors can watch through a glass wall – although please note it's closed to visitors on Mondays, when the team does its more delicate work.
Director
The second floor is for temporary exhibitions. The first one, opening with the museum, is about the harbour's fishing communities. And finally, the rooftop terrace, which is also reached from the second floor, has views over the whole harbour. It's the thing I suspect visitors will love most, but it's only open in good weather.
Director
One last point. Entry to the permanent galleries is free, but there's a small charge for temporary exhibitions. What we really need from volunteers in the first month is help explaining this, because it's the question we expect to be asked most often.
