Hosting a major international sporting event is often presented as a source of national pride and economic opportunity. However, such events are extremely expensive, and some argue that the money would do more good if it were spent on local sports facilities. I largely agree with this view, although I accept that international events can bring benefits when they are planned with long-term local use in mind.

There are understandable reasons why governments compete to host these events. They can attract tourists and international media attention, and they may speed up investment in transport and infrastructure that would otherwise take decades. Supporters also argue that watching national athletes perform at home inspires young people to take up sport.

However, these benefits are often less certain than they appear. The economic gains from tourism may be short-lived, while the costs of construction and security are substantial and frequently exceed initial estimates. More importantly, many venues built for a few weeks of competition are poorly suited to everyday use and may be expensive to maintain afterwards. The inspirational effect, too, is unlikely to translate into lasting participation unless people have convenient, affordable places to play. A teenager who is excited by an international tournament but has no local pitch or pool nearby is unlikely to become more active.

Local facilities, by contrast, offer more reliable and widely shared benefits. Community sports centres, safe parks and school pitches are used by thousands of ordinary people every week, supporting physical health, social connection and the kind of early participation that produces both lifelong exercise and, eventually, elite athletes.

In conclusion, while major sporting events can bring prestige and some lasting infrastructure, I believe that, in most cases, investing in local facilities represents a far better use of public money. If countries do choose to host such events, they should ensure that every venue is designed with long-term community use in mind.
