Q: Do you often look at the sky at night? Not as often as I’d like. In the city, there’s so much light pollution that you’re lucky to see more than a handful of stars. The last time I really looked was on a trip to the countryside – I’d forgotten how many there are. I’d imagine most people who grew up in cities have never seen the Milky Way properly.
Q: Were you interested in science as a child? Very much – I was the kind of child who took things apart to see how they worked, usually without putting them back together. I suspect that’s partly why I ended up in a technical job.

Something I’d really like to know more about is how birds manage to migrate such enormous distances without getting lost.
I became interested in it a couple of years ago, when I noticed flocks of birds arriving in the wetlands near my home town every autumn and disappearing again in spring. An older man who fishes there told me that some of them come from thousands of kilometres away and return to almost exactly the same place every year. I remember thinking that I can barely find my way around a new city without my phone.
As far as I understand, scientists believe birds use several different methods at the same time – the position of the sun, the stars at night, and possibly the Earth’s magnetic field. But I only know the basics, and from what I’ve read, some parts of it are still not fully understood, particularly how they sense magnetism.
If I could spend a year studying it, I’d love to go out with a research team that tracks birds with small electronic tags. I’d want to see the data for myself – where they stop, how long they rest, what happens when the weather changes.
I think the reason it fascinates me is that it’s a reminder of how much we still don’t know about things happening right in front of us. We tend to think the big mysteries are in space, but there are unanswered questions in a wetland ten minutes from my parents’ house.
