Buổi 125: Writing Task 2 – Opinion: tư nhân hóa khám phá vũ trụ

🎯 Sau buổi này bạn có thể

🔁 1. Ôn tập – 10 phút

🔁 Ôn thẻ từ vựng đến hạn

🧠 Nhớ lại buổi trước (không xem tài liệu)

  1. Buổi 85: tách câu hỏi sự thật và câu hỏi giá trị – áp dụng thế nào cho chủ đề vũ trụ?
  2. Buổi 121: “If confirmed, this would…” – vì sao không viết “will”?
  3. “accountability” nghĩa là gì?

Trả lời to hoặc viết ra giấy, rồi mới mở lại buổi trước để kiểm tra.

✍️ 2. Đầu vào – 25 phút

Đề: Space exploration is increasingly being carried out by private companies rather than governments. Is this a positive or negative development?

Suy đoán & điều kiện

  1. Competition between companies may well the cost of launching satellites.
  2. If left , commercial activity could increase the amount of space debris.
  3. Private firms are not to voters in the way that public agencies are.
  4. Partnerships between the public and private could combine efficiency with public oversight.

For most of its history, space exploration was carried out almost entirely by national governments. In recent years, however, private companies have taken on a growing role, from launching satellites to developing spacecraft. I believe this is largely a positive development, but only if governments continue to regulate the industry and protect the public interest.

The main advantage of private involvement is cost. Companies competing for contracts have strong incentives to reduce expenses, for example by designing rockets that can be reused rather than discarded after a single launch. Lower launch costs make it possible for universities, smaller countries and research institutions to put instruments into orbit, which could broaden access to space considerably. Moreover, when routine tasks such as transporting equipment are handled by commercial firms, public space agencies may be free to concentrate on ambitious scientific missions that offer no immediate profit.

However, there are genuine risks. Private companies are ultimately accountable to their shareholders rather than to the public, so their priorities may not always coincide with scientific or social goals. If a small number of firms came to dominate the industry, they could potentially control access to space in the way that monopolies control other markets. There are environmental concerns as well: a rapid increase in commercial satellites, if left unregulated, would add to the growing problem of space debris, which threatens other spacecraft.

These risks, in my view, are reasons for careful oversight rather than for excluding private companies altogether. Governments can set international rules on debris and safety, require scientific data from publicly funded missions to be shared openly, and use contracts to ensure that commercial activity serves wider goals.

In conclusion, the growing role of private companies in space exploration is likely to reduce costs and accelerate innovation. Provided that it is accompanied by strong regulation and public accountability, it represents a positive change.

  1. Phán đoán rõ có điều kiện: largely positive… but only if…
  2. Mặt tích cực có chuỗi: cạnh tranh → tái sử dụng tên lửa → giảm chi phí → mở rộng tiếp cận; cơ quan nhà nước tập trung vào khoa học.
  3. Mặt tiêu cực có cơ chế: cổ đông vs công chúng; độc quyền; rác vũ trụ – dùng giả định (If… came to dominate…, they could potentially…).
  4. Thân 3 biến rủi ro thành lý do giám sát, không phải lý do loại bỏ.
  5. Không nêu tên công ty hay số liệu – ví dụ khái quát (rockets that can be reused).

⚠️ Lỗi hay gặp ở band 6.5: liệt kê lợi – hại rồi it depends; dự đoán chắc chắn (companies will colonise Mars by…); nêu tên công ty và chi tiết không chắc chắn.

🧩 3. Ngôn ngữ trọng tâm – 10 phút: giả định về hậu quả tương lai

📝 Proposal summary (60–90 từ)

Write a one-paragraph summary of a project proposal for a senior manager who has two minutes to read it: the problem, the proposed solution, the expected benefit, the cost or resources, and the decision you need.

Rework on the night shift has been about two percentage points higher than on the day shift for three months. We propose a four-week investigation comparing lighting and training records, led by one supervisor, at a cost of roughly ten working hours and a light meter. If the cause is confirmed, targeted changes could bring night-shift rework in line with the day shift. We would like approval to start on 4 January.
