Q: Do you drink much water? Probably not enough, to be honest. I know I should stay hydrated, especially in summer, but when I’m busy I just forget. What’s helped is keeping a big bottle on my desk – if it’s in front of me, I drink it.
Q: Do you like going to the sea? I do, although not so much for swimming – more for walking along the shore. There’s a stretch of coast a couple of hours from the city where the river meets the sea – I’m not sure of the exact word, the place where fresh water and salt water mix – and the birdlife there is amazing.

The place I’d like to talk about is a river that runs through the town where I grew up. It’s not a famous river – it’s fairly narrow, and most people outside the province have never heard of it – but it was a big part of my childhood.
When I was a kid, I used to go there almost every afternoon after school with my friends. We’d sit on the riverbank, throw stones, and sometimes help the older men pull in their fishing nets. In the dry season the water was clear enough to see the bottom near the edges, and in the rainy season it turned a kind of reddish-brown colour and rose so high that it sometimes flooded the lower streets.
Over the years, it’s changed quite a lot. A few factories were built upstream, and for a while the river became quite polluted – there were times when you could smell it from the bridge. People stopped fishing there, and the riverbank was used mainly for dumping rubbish.
The good news is that things have improved recently. The local council introduced stricter controls on the factories, and a group of residents now organises monthly clean-ups along the bank. When I went back last year, I saw a few children fishing again, which was quite moving.
I feel a mixture of nostalgia and hope about the place. It’ll probably never be exactly as I remember it, but it’s a reminder that damage isn’t always permanent if people decide to do something about it.
