Counting happiness
(Bài đọc tự viết; nội dung ở mức phổ thông, không có số liệu thật.)
A Researchers who try to measure happiness generally use one of two approaches. The first, often called evaluative, asks people to step back and judge their life as a whole – typically by choosing a number on a scale from zero to ten. The second, experiential, approach is less interested in such overall judgements than in how people actually feel as they go about their day.
B Evaluative questions have obvious practical advantages. They take seconds to answer, can be added to existing surveys at little cost, and are now asked in many countries. Their weakness is that the answers can be surprisingly sensitive to circumstances that have nothing to do with a person’s life. Some studies have suggested that the weather on the day of the survey, or the question that came immediately before, may nudge responses up or down.
C Experiential methods attempt to avoid this problem by asking about specific moments. In one common design, participants receive a message on their phone at random times and report what they are doing and how they feel. Because the reports are made in the moment, they are thought to capture everyday feelings more accurately than any retrospective judgement. The cost is considerable, however: such studies are demanding for participants and expensive to run, and they therefore tend to involve far fewer people than national surveys.
D Perhaps the most interesting finding is that the two kinds of measure do not always agree. Activities that people report as tiring or stressful in the moment – raising young children is a frequently cited example – may nonetheless contribute to a strong sense that life is going well overall. Neither measure is simply right; they appear to capture different things.
E Comparisons between countries raise further difficulties. In some cultures, modesty may discourage people from placing themselves at the very top of any scale, while in others enthusiasm is the norm. Many researchers therefore regard changes within a single country over time as more trustworthy than league tables of the “happiest nations”.
F None of this has stopped governments from taking an interest. Several have begun to publish official wellbeing indicators, and a few have experimented with using them when deciding how to allocate public money. Most present these figures alongside, rather than instead of, conventional economic statistics – which is, I would suggest, exactly where they belong: as a complement to measures of income, not a replacement for them.
✅ Câu 1–10: TRUE, FALSE hoặc NOT GIVEN
1. Evaluative questions ask people to judge their life as a whole.
2. Evaluative questions are more expensive to include in surveys than experiential methods.
3. Answers to evaluative questions are never affected by unrelated factors.
4. Experiential studies usually involve larger samples than national surveys.
5. Experiential methods are thought to be better at capturing everyday feelings.
6. The two types of measure always produce the same results.
7. Experiential studies are more popular with participants than evaluative surveys.
8. Changes within one country over time are often seen as more reliable than comparisons between countries.
9. Most governments now publish official wellbeing indicators.
10. Governments that publish wellbeing figures have generally stopped publishing economic statistics.
🔍 Bẫy trong bài
- Câu 2 & 4 đảo chiều so sánh – đọc kỹ ai “more”, ai “fewer”.
- Câu 7 dùng so sánh mà bài không có (more popular with participants) → NOT GIVEN, dù bài có nói về người tham gia.
- Câu 9 đổi several → most: bài không nói ngược lại → NOT GIVEN. So với câu 3: may nudge vs never → mâu thuẫn trực tiếp → FALSE.
|---|---|
| all / always / every | hiếm khi đúng với dữ liệu xã hội |
| most / generally / typically | đa số |
| several / a number of / some | một vài |
| a few / occasionally | ít |
| no / never / none | hiếm khi đúng |
👉 Khi viết Task 2: nếu không có dữ liệu, chọn nấc many / often / some, tránh all / never.

Most respondents were satisfied, though a significant minority were not.
The sample was quite small, so I'd treat this as indicative rather than conclusive.
Mẫu khá nhỏ nên tôi coi đây là gợi ý hơn là kết luận.
Satisfaction appears to have risen slightly since last year.
Mức hài lòng có vẻ tăng nhẹ so với năm ngoái.
We can't say from this survey why people feel that way.
